Tanzanian hip-hop legend MwanaFA breaks a near four-year solo seclusion with “Baraka Nyingi,” a very thoughtful comeback record focused on gratitude and growth.
Four years is a long time to keep quiet. But MwanaFA—whose real name is Hamis Mwinjuma—has not been inactive. The solo records were over. He found a second career in public service. He is the Member of Parliament for Muheza and Deputy Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports in President Samia Suluhu’s administration. So the MwanaFA who returns with “Baraka Nyingi” hits differently than the rapper who went.
“Baraka Nyingi” is Swahili for “many blessings.” And that title isn’t a fluke. He’s not coming back with a trash track or a club hit; he returns with appreciation—which fits the version of himself who spent these years in studios rather than in parliament. For a man who is thinking about where he has been and what he has been given is a man who chooses his words wisely. And the writing displays just that kind of patience here.
It was always his cerebral lyricism and storytelling that distinguished him from his East Coast Team peers. “Baraka Nyingi” confirms that such instincts are still very much alive. The rap delivery stays crisp all the way through. But the message is more important than the performance in the record.
The hip-hop scene in Tanzania has seen a lot of changes during the past four years. But MwanaFA still has a voice with the kind of authority that newer singers just haven’t had time to create yet.
Listen to “Baraka Nyingi” below and let us know—was the four-year wait worth it?
