Nigerian Afrobeats musician Fireboy DML explores South Africa’s modern dance music space on “IMALI,” collaborating with JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela as part of the marketing for his upcoming fifth studio album ZUKO!.
The collab comes after August’s “CLAAT!” with Masicka and continues Fireboy’s recent interest in working across distinct African and Caribbean sounds. JAZZWRLD & Thukuthela Come Together In A Collaboration That Is Already Making Waves In South Africa’s Current 3-Step And Afro-house Movement.
The tune sees Fireboy’s melodic approach placed in a rhythm setting based in South Africa, giving his vocals a distinct frame compared to the dancehall direction of his previous single. The contrast also makes Thukuthela’s presence feel natural alongside Fireboy rather than tacked-on.
The collab comes hot on the heels of a lot of regional momentum for JAZZWRLD and Thukuthela after The Most Wanted became a huge streaming success in South Africa, while Fireboy already has a worldwide audience for his Afrobeats. That combination provides the release obvious cross-over appeal in both areas.
