Nigerian musician Spiky links up with local rapper Hugo P for a new collaboration titled ‘Look Around’, merging two contrasting vocal styles into one tune.
Spiky has been making some noise on a couple of guest features lately, most notably his turn on Chief Priest’s ‘Best ’, where he proved he can hang with the big names.
And so “Spiky Look Around” is a fitting follow-up, this time with Spiky in the leading part instead of the supporting one.
Hugo P contributes his own indigenous rap delivery to the mix, a style that draws on local vernacular and street-level storytelling as opposed to the popular Afrobeats sounds. That coupling provides “Look Around” a raw, grounded intensity that sets it distinct from the radio-ready sound that dominates playlists these days. Two artists working in opposite lanes can easily collide, but in this case the contrast becomes the record’s finest feature, not a problem.
Neither artist has yet created a large presence, but collaborations like this are typically how new names find their footing. The pairing with a rapper recognized for indigenous flows also suggests that Spiky is not chasing the safest possible sound for his early releases.
For those listeners who desire something a bit rougher around the edges than the average chart-ready hit, “Look Around” is just the ticket.
