Kunmie teams up with street-hop heavyweight Zlatan for “Pressure,” one of the more daring collabs on his debut album, “22.”
The record works due of the contrast of the two artists. Kunmie brings his soulful, emotionally grounded vocal style that made him a name with “Arike” and the “Gorgeous” million-stream run with Lojay. Then Zlatan crashes in with the charming, high-energy delivery that’s kept him current from “Zanku” till “Motion Sickness” with ODUMODUBLVCK. So that the two sounds don’t run into each other. They hit each other, and that tension is the energy of “Pressure”
This article explores the truth behind the pursuit of success when life continues throwing you road obstacles. But neither artist is coming from a complain-y place. It is driven by Zlatan’s street swagger but tempered by Kunmie’s emotional weakness. A song called “Pressure” needs two emotional temperatures, a temperature that recognizes the weight and a temperature that says no to it. Both males do so.
Especially for Kunmie, having Zlatan on the album tells something about how far his profile has progressed since “Arike” hit number one on the Official Nigeria Top 100. That chart run opened doors in a way that a first single from a fledgling artist rarely opens so rapidly. And bringing Zlatan inside “22” confirms that he’s marching thru those doors with purpose.
The album drops August 14th. “Pressure” is the kind of record that makes sure no one sleeps on it when it drops.
