Kenyan rapper Kapitani climbs to number one on Kenya’s YouTube Music trending chart with “Kitemeo”, produced by Capo — racking up 168,000 views in 2 days of release.

The record did something strange. It gave the streets of Nairobi a word that bypassed the song and became part of common speech. “Kitemeo” — a slang term for khat, the stimulant chewed by many people in urban Kenyan neighborhoods — became a shorthand for the overall experience the song recounts. That’s how street music works when it’s really catching fire.

The writing is purposely sloppy. Kapitani switches between English, Kiswahili and Sheng without notice — referencing Korogocho, black coffee, blunts, nduthi, marriage turmoil, day-to-day money pressure and the frantic yearning to flee it all.

So the music is like a chat you may overhear outside a shop. The lexicon of Nairobi is so particular it could never be mistaken for music from somewhere else.

The hook works — one minute you’re trying to locate the day’s money, the next you’re talking about a dispute with the wife before departing with the sons. It’s that cycle of stress and release that makes “Kitemeo” a cultural event, not just a trendy song.

MP Babu Owino even grabbed a pic with Kapitani – which explains everything about how fast the song was from the streets to mainstream debate. Already, Spotify shows almost 72,000 monthly listeners riding on a collection that includes ‘Chubwi,’ ‘Niwashe’ and ‘Hii Mwaka’ from 2026 alone.

This is Nairobi street music in its rawest form. Listen to “Kitemeo” and let us know – does Kapitani deserve the number one spot?
