Huyu, the fifth track on the album, is one of the most intimate moments on the “31” album harmonize.
“Huyu” in Swahili means “this one” or “this person” – and the title has the particular intimacy of pointing straight at someone and declaring that they are the one. nor metaphor, nor poetry. A declaration addressed to one individual. When the feeling is this tight, you don’t need to write much for Harmonize. Strength is simplicity.
Structurally, track five is a smart spot to put it too. The album opens with Young Lunya’s ‘For No Reason’. “Kudos” is a single. Then there’s “Beautiful” featuring Wande Coal and “Tangazo” with Marioo for that Nigerian and Tanzanian collab excitement. So “Huyu” comes in just at the middle point of the album as a second solo statement—Harmonize stepping away from the multinational lineup and speaking directly from himself alone before the emotional weight of “Siwezi” with Rayvanny hits at track seven.
His silky vocals deliver the love message all the way through without the production having to do much heavy lifting. Because that’s what the best Bongo Flava solo records do: they trust the voice and the writing to command the listener’s attention without a featured artist to share the weight. That’s an instinct that has established an entire career for Harmonize, and “Huyu” is another fine example of that.
