Fally Ipupa – Minuit

Congolese rumba icon Fally Ipupa gets introspective on “Minuit,” a slow-burning track from his sprawling “XX: Délirium” collection. Clocking in at eight minutes and twelve seconds, this one is made for the late hours that the title hints at.

Fally Ipupa spent the entirety of this double album exploring different emotional registers and “Minuit,” which translates to “Midnight,” goes for something more atmospheric than his typical passionate vows. The extended running time gives him time to settle in to the groove without feeling he has to rush from one section to the next and it reflects the vast approach Congolese rumba has traditionally embraced. Most of “XX: Délirium” is about huge declarations and historical imagery, so this one seems like a conscious exhale in the larger project.

The production is slow-guitar-led throughout, comfortable and unhurried in its tempo. There aren’t any big, dramatic build-ups here. Rather, the arrangement allows the song a lot of leeway to evolve organically, giving atmosphere priority over structure. It sounds like a tune made for contemplation, not performance.

“Minuit” works because Fally Ipupa leans so hard into that slow, ambient tempo. Nothing here hurries to an easy conclusion. It feels like one of the more contemplative stretches of the entire “XX: Délirium” production.
