Fally Ipupa – Amour cruel

Congolese rumba icon Fally Ipupa delivers “Amour Cruel,” track six off disk one of his sprawling “XX: Délirium” opus. The title translates to “cruel love,” and at just under seven minutes this one really allows itself time to settle with that complicated concept.

“Amour Cruel” goes into the unpleasant realm that love can bring at times, and Fally Ipupa’s created this whole album around the exploration of many facets of passion. It appears just before “Den’s Love” in the tracklist and is a pivot toward the deeper emotional truths of the larger narrative of disk one. The song about the cruelties of love gives significant depth to that larger romantic narrative, particularly given how much “XX: Délirium” wallows in magnificent adoration.

The production is based on a long, patient Congolese rumba and has a lot of potential to grow the arrangement as it goes. Here there is no running toward resolution. Instead, the instrumental is slow and measured, giving the complex feelings at the heart of the song room to breathe.

The success of “Amour Cruel” comes from Fally Ipupa embracing that emotional depth, not hurrying through it. The longer duration allows the theme to breathe freely. It feels like a lot deeper take on romance in a much larger, emotionally richer project.
