Ogene music heavyweight and protector of culture Chief Michael Udegbi is back with a very traditional production titled “Odegbii Ayaka Na Egwu Vol. 2”.
This is a timely effort, as younger audiences are embracing local culture and roots music with enthusiasm. Many music lovers search for the authentic deep sound of local metal gongs and historical wind instruments. The veteran musician uses his voice to keep the classic sounds alive in a new age. His music is a vibrant sound image which leads you into the heart of the eastern countryside.
The instrumentalists weave a truly mesmeric rhythm with huge, echoing Ogene gongs and rolling indigenous drums. In the background, the flute player plays some hard piercing tunes to set the rhythm of the performance. But the percussionists play an extremely fast, high-energy beat that makes your feet dance. This is a great representation of the raw intensity of a live village event with this tremendous acoustic set-up.
The CD is led with remarkable power by Chief Michael Udegbi. He sings in his distinctive, command-heavy vocal tone. He spits deep traditional proverbs and street wise views all in the indigenous Igbo language. His voice is still so raw, perfect for the loud metal clashing of the instruments. His call-and-response with his backup vocalists also contributes to a really community vibe.
The lyricism in this collection is very much about human character, fate and the truths of existence. Chief Michael Udegbi sings on the importance of integrity, hard labor and giving respect to ancestors. His amusing narrative urges people to be careful with their names and to be humble in their dealings. The joyous dancing music is underpinned by strong moral teachings, adding a sombre philosophical undertone.
This is a very gratifying and culturally enlightening event, an homage to old school folklore. The switch from frantic drumming to low guttural chanting is beautifully fluid and spontaneous. It’s a record that is both a heavy dance track and a profound storehouse of local Igbo philosophy.
