Legendary Igbo highlife musician Bright Chimezie drops this wonderful single titled “Every Work Get Pay.”
Every job gets remuneration, plain and simple, and that’s pretty much the whole premise. There’s nothing concealed beneath a title that straightforward. It means precisely what it says.
Most of it is highlife instrumentation, with guitar and horns swapping space over a continuous, rolling rhythm section. Also, it’s not rushed like the arrangement; it takes its time like the older highlife records normally do.
His delivery is equally direct, with no shouting needed to make the point. He knows enough to state it simply, like a proverb, without elaboration.
Nothing fancy here, and it doesn’t have to be. Sometimes the truth is just out there and that’s all.
Sit with “Every Work Get Pay” when the message is more important than anything wrapped around it.
