Fally Ipupa – “Fourah” Congolese rumba legend Fally Ipupa rounds out disk three of his gigantic “XX: Délirium” project. Track thirteen finishes this part of the CD before disk four begins.

Fally constructed this entire record on twenty years of rumba skill, disk by disk. This track is a real changeover point, shortly before “C’est Comment” begins disk four. Closing tracks are usually heavier, serving as a last word before the new chapter begins.

It remains anchored in the traditional rumba base, patient and beautifully textured throughout. Nothing here resolves easily or quickly. He keeps his confidence going throughout his delivery, making this final moment mean everything. Sounds quite cognizant of the change this song reflects.

He knows how to sequence a fifty-one-track record. And the end of disk three says something on purpose. Fally doesn’t go too big on the lyrics, keeping it grounded, leaning more on calm assurance than extravagant gestures here. It feels like a real piece of punctuation in a much larger body of work.

“Fourah” works because Fally Ipupa totally commits to the idea of concluding one chapter successfully. No hurry, no second thoughts about this. It seemed like a natural way to ease into his sprawling rumba party to celebrate the twentieth anniversary.
