Fally Ipupa – Victoire

Congolese rumba legend Fally Ipupa is back with a long version of “Victoire” from his sprawling “XX: Délirium” project. It is six minutes and fifty-eight seconds long, giving plenty of room for it to build up to the meaning of its title.

Fally Ipupa has constructed the whole album to play with different emotional registers and “Victoire,” which means “Victory,” plays into triumph and personal achievement. He takes care of the writing and composition credits himself, with Alban Ancel-Pirouelle on recording and mixing and Alex Gopher on mastering. That sort of care in the making is evident in the detail that went into constructing this record.

The production is deliberate and layered throughout, allowing the arrangement to slowly blossom instead of rushing to its pinnacle. None of it is compressed; none of it is hurried. Instead, the instrumental is relaxed, fitting the length with true musical growth throughout the album.

“Victoire” works because Fally Ipupa totally commits to that triumphant, unhurried energy. Not a single second of the long runtime is wasted. Looks like it’s a milestone project in a career span. A proper celebration.
