South African multi-instrumentalist Sims Noreng has Mavee DripGod and Mabena102 on “Chomi Yami,” track four on his seven-song EP “Norengville.”
Actually Mabena102 appears more than once in this project. Sims Noreng had already had him on “Hololo” earlier in the tracklist, so bringing him back here with Mavee DripGod suggests Sims Noreng believes that chemistry enough to revisit it. This one is very much in the summer-ready Amapiano route, made for parties and extended weekends rather than deep meditation.
But it is the chorus that really sells “Sims Noreng Chomi Yami.” It’s the kind of hook that lodges itself in your head after one listen, which helps a lot for a track this dance-floor focused. Smooth voices and engaging rhythms lie on top of a good musical base, allowing both featured artists to put their unique spin without cramping the beat. Sims Noreng has gained a reputation for this sort of steady, well-produced Amapiano work, and “Norengville” as a whole appears to be designed around that constancy.
Between “Hololo” and “Stop or Go,” this track keeps the energy of the EP locked into feel-good territory during the middle stretch.
