South African artist Sims Noreng is holding it down solo on “Stop or go,” track five on his seven-song EP “Norengville.”
No featured performer here unlike most of the surrounding tracklisting. So “Sims Noreng Stop or Go” places his own vocals and instrumental sensibilities right in the middle, between the guest-heavy “Chomi Yami” and “Imibuzo.” That choice of sequencing important. It’s a moment to breathe from collaboration before the EP pulls in Focalistic for the concluding tune.
The record is a classic Amapiano groove, great for chilling at home and getting a dance floor moving. Smooth vocals float over addictive rhythm, making it danceable without sacrificing the melodic warmth that’s been the rest of “Norengville.” Sims Noreng’s musical talents are on full display here, and as a multi-instrumentalist he’s building more than just vocal performance across this album.
The term itself suggests ambivalence, the push-and-pull of committing and holding back, however the production never sounds unsure. It’s one of the more confident, straight-ahead tunes on the whole EP if anything.
