Sims Noreng wraps out his “Norengville” EP with “Retloba Wete,” featuring one of Amapiano’s most known singers, Focalistic.
Seven tracks in, and this is the only guest appearance drawn from outside the project’s regular circle of collaborators. So “Sims Noreng Retloba Wete” adds a little more weight than the prior features. Focalistic’s mere presence is inscribed with a distinct kind of crossover appeal, the kind that pulls his current following into Sims Noreng’s world, rather than vise versa.
The title is colloquial in a way that is very Southern African. Sims Noreng anchors the record, allowing Focalistic to slide in with his trademark dynamic delivery and clever wording. The whole thing is carried by rolling rhythms and deep basslines, giving it that polished, danceable sound built for parties and long journeys both. Here are two artists of somewhat contrasting profiles meeting at ease, honestly. Neither one dominates, which makes the record feel collaborative and not like a guest verse on someone’s song.
Closing out “Norengville” with the biggest name makes sense as a distribution tactic, giving the EP a wider entry point after six tracks focused largely around Sims Noreng’s personal circle.
