Ugandan gospel artist Best Emily releases a soulful cover of “Ayi Yesu Nkunzi Yangye” from Ibanda, Uganda, via Music For All.
The title translates from the Runyankole language as “Oh Jesus, My Strength”—and – and that statement says it all about where this song sits spiritually. Best Emily doesn’t take things easy. She invests a line with full vocal dedication that East African Christians have sung in church service for decades. But her take on the familiar is personal, not a performance.
“Ayi Yesu Nkunzi Yangye” has been in the gospel music heritage in Western Uganda for years. But there is a place for cover versions of cherished worship songs when the new voice brings something the original could not provide. So Best Emily does not merely repeat what has been done before.
