This August, Nigerian DJ-turned-artist SSSoundGawd debuted “Mamacita,” and he finally had a tune with his name in front and no features cluttering the credits.
Produced by Lilgeebeatz. That’s more important than you may think, because SSSoundGawd himself has spent years on the opposite side of that interaction — the guy behind the boards, not the guy on the mic. In this manner, he’s managed to weave himself through half of the Kilogbede Records library, working in production with Mavo, dropping a guest verse on “Hey Mama” with Mavo and Joshua Baraka, and showing up again on KRL’s “Jollof Rice”. Ubiquitous, Not Often Focused
That’s what “MAMACITA” does. It’s a brief record — as it should be. No filler, no drawn-out outro to hit a run-time target. It’s impossible to determine if such restraint is due to years of working on other artists’ songs, but the fingerprints are there if you look for them.
He’s no stranger to solo work either. There was “SWAGGA” before this, part of the same quiet development toward a real solo repertoire. Kilogbede Records has evidently been prepping him for it. Mavo still anchors the label’s identity, while SSSoundGawd continues inching toward his own path, one record at a time.
“MAMACITA” hits as a statement, or is it just another item on the ever-growing list? Too early to tell. But it’s the sound of a producer stepping out from behind the console – and so far he seems comfortable there.
