Portugal will face Nigeria on Wednesday night in their final international friendly before heading to the United States ahead of the much-anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026. The match will take place at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, kicking off at 8.45 pm BST.

As the global tournament heads into its final stages, both teams will be eager to fine-tune their squads and build momentum for their upcoming challenges.

Major squad boosts for Portugal.

Portugal goes into the fixture with a full head of steam and with a near full-strength squad to choose from. Manager Roberto Martínez has been handed a major boost with Paris Saint-Germain stars Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Vitinha, and Gonçalo Ramos arriving after finishing club commitments.

Midfielder Matheus Nunes has also returned to full training following a short illness. Portugal, however, will be missing winger Rafael Leão, who is suspended after a red card in the team’s recent win over Chile.

Goalkeeper Diogo Costa is expected to start the game, with veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo potentially starting on the bench as Martínez looks to rotate his squad and keep key players fresh ahead of the World Cup.

Super Eagles Ready to Take on European Giants

A young Nigerian arrived in Portugal under head coach Éric Chelle. The Super Eagles will miss their star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who will give other players a chance to step up to the big stage.

Defender Igoh Ogbu is also doubtful after picking up an injury in training camp, while winger Femi Azeez was unable to join the squad due to club commitments.

But there is good news for Nigeria as experienced midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is set to captain the team. He is expected to partner Frank Onyeka in midfield as the Super Eagles seek to disrupt Portugal’s rhythm and dominate possession.

It will also be a memorable occasion for Alex Iwobi, who is expected to make his 100th appearance for Nigeria and become one of the few players to reach that landmark.

Recent Results

Portugal have been looking sharp in their latest games with Gonçalo Guedes and Bruno Fernandes scoring in their 2-1 victory over Chile. They also beat the United States 2-0 and drew 0-0 with Mexico.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is five games without defeat. Recently, the Super Eagles played out a 2-2 draw against Poland with Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu scoring the goals. Earlier, they had recorded impressive friendly wins against Jamaica and Zimbabwe.

Predicted line-ups

Portugal: Diogo Costa; Dalot, Dias, Inácio, Mendes; Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, João Neves; Bernardo Silva, Gonçalo Guedes, Pedro Neto.

Nigeria: Maduka Okoye; Bewene, Bassey, Fernandez, Onyemaechi; Moses Simon, Frank Onyeka, Wilfred Ndidi, Nnadi; Adams, Terem Moffi.

Both will be looking to finish their preparations with a bang, and football fans can expect an entertaining clash in Leiria. Portugal will be looking to maintain their good form in the lead-up to the World Cup, while Nigeria will view this as an excellent opportunity to test itself against one of the best teams in Europe.
