anefa Ngidi heads for familiar maskandi territory with “Omahlalestolo”, and this one has that same familiar weariness his catalogue’s built on.

The moniker Omahlalestolo is one that requires some unpacking. It’s associated with the idea of people who just sit, hang about, maybe overstay in a place where they shouldn’t be. Zanefa Ngidi is obviously investigating something social here. Not preaching about it but more observing.

Guitar’s doing his thing, as usual. That familiar chosen pattern, not that this lot ever strays from it. The percussion is basic, mostly for time-keeping rather than flare. Same bare-bones formula that has worked for him on every other release.

This time, Zanefa Ngidi sings with a wry edge, less tender than “Ikhekhe Lami”, more sharp. Sounds like someone who’s seen people, not invented a persona. You may not know every word, but the detail still comes through.

Lyrics are all about that subject of hanging around, overstaying, whatever the local context behind it truly is. Doesn’t directly spell out a moral lesson. Simply names the conduct and lets listeners decide for themselves.

There is nothing earth-shattering about “Omahlalestolo” in terms of structure and Zanefa Ngidi doesn’t need it to be. Same guitar, same voice, but the subject matter is a little crisper this time. Formula still works
