Lagos-based mash-up creator Wilcoxx continues a collection built around modifying familiar Afrobeats recordings with “Forgiveness Mashup,” his own take on Asake’s “Forgiveness.”
The mash-up keeps the recognizable vocal material from Asake’s song but places it within Wilcoxx’s reinterpretive framework. This follows last August’s ‘treat you right mashup,’ which further signaled his commitment to the reinterpretation of established records.
Wilcoxx arrives at the track as a mashup engineer and producer who, by way of arrangement and vocal placement, gives the familiar material a distinct presentation. The result remains firmly anchored in Afrosounds, but it is more of a creative remake than a typical cover.
His growing portfolio of mashups has helped develop a unique brand around remix culture and social media discovery. “Forgiveness Mashup” fits well with that collection and allows listeners who already know Asake’s original another chance to get into it.
