South African soulful Amapiano act uNkosazana teams up with SKING on a new poignant single named “Vuma Vuma.”
This one was released April 9 on PianoFever and fits well into uNkosazana’s growing catalogue of collaborative Amapiano recordings. She’s been working with the likes of Master KB and Cardinal X25, building a solid string of features lately. That constancy has served to define her voice as one of the more soulful entrants in the genre.
Production here leans into delicate, melodic Amapiano textures rather than the genre’s harsher log-drum side. Still the arrangement is laid back and leisurely and the vocals are given a major role. The music is restrained, so the emotional essence of the record comes across clearly.
From the very first bars uNkosazana’s vocal performance is one of real tenderness, preferring feeling to flash. Her speech glides over the beat, rather than straining against it. The restraint is fitting for the soulful Amapiano niche she has carved out for herself.
