South African producer Stakev joins forces with Xduppy on “Unexpected” featuring Amapiano royalty Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa.
This one has an actual working relationship. Already in Stakev’s library is a shout with Kabza De Small, and his latest release follows 2025’s song Ngiyavuma and last year’s Timeless album. Stakev has proved they’ll turn up anywhere the rhythm takes them, and has earned enough cred with the Scorpion Kings themselves, Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa, to get them back for another round. Xduppy’s own catalog continues to be just as busy, popping up on several Amapiano collaborations this year.
Deep inside that characteristic sound, production is focused around percussion and rolling log drums with piano melodies. Nothing leaps to a hook in here. The groove is hypnotic throughout, leaving opportunity for all four artists to make their imprint without overloading the mix.
Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa then add their own instincts on top of it, bringing that distinct Scorpion Kings touch. They’re all about the chemistry, from the first drop to the last.
It works unexpectedly because four familiar hands already know how to make a groove together.
