ShaunMusiq piles on the feature list on “Shabalala Konke,” bringing in Zee Nxumalo, Senzo Afrika, Tshepo Keyz and Thatohatsi off his album “Missing Piece”.
This is one of the larger group efforts on the whole project, four separate voices sharing the same album. That’s a lot of chemistry to manage on one track, but it’s in keeping with the overall collaborative ethos of the album. ShaunMusiq is not afraid to develop something greater than a single cut here.
The instrumental is based around that classic Amapiano warmth with delicate piano work and rolling log drumming below. The melodic layering has the touch of Tshepo Keyz on the production, giving the beat significant substance. Every voice segment feels like a purposeful build toward something whole, not a scattering. That type of coordination is rare with so many cooks in one kitchen.
“Shabalala Konke” works because it takes a lot of features and makes it feel like it’s all about one thing. There’s nothing about the book to suggest too many cooks in the kitchen. That’s what makes it one of the best collective efforts on “Missing Piece.”
This is a great song; you will be vibing to it all day and night. Hit play, and you’ll be vibing to this tune all day and all night.
