Tanzanian rap diva Rosa Ree goes full regional pride mode on “Mkaskazini,” a Controller-produced cut released via The Orchard Enterprises.
The term translates to “The Northerner” in Swahili — and Rosa Ree isn’t taking it lightly. She is genuinely rooted in the northern part of Tanzania, born in Moshi and raised in Arusha. Hence, when she raps about Mount Kilimanjaro, Mererani, indigenous cuisine and Mbege – the regionally famed banana drink – it sounds like autobiography, not cultural tourism. All the references are well earned.
The production is hard all the way through. Controller delivers an aggressive beat with strong percussion that complements the declarative force of the text. Rosa Ree’s aggressive voice sits right on top of the tune, neither buried nor refined into something gentler. Because a pride anthem about the north of Tanzania needs a rapper that sounds like she means every word, and she does.
“Mkaskazini” also operates outside the northern audience. The quality that makes it locally resonant is the trait that makes it intriguing globally. Because music that comes from a real local and cultural identity travels differently than generic anthems. Arusha, Moshi and the Kilimanjaro region have their own soundtrack – and this is it.
