Mkataba Mc slows things down with “Maumivu,” a spectacular but raw piece of music that you’ll love to listen to over and over again.
Maumivu is simply agony, nothing more, no metaphor to adorn it. This is about something, and Mkataba Mc is not hiding behind fancy wordplay to convey whatever. Sometimes the simplest title is the most honest.
Instrumental sparseness, a few low piano notes lingering under minimal percussion, barely there actually. It’s space that dominates the track more than sound. There’s no superfluous filling up of the stillness, and that emptiness sort of becomes the point.
Mkataba Mc’s delivery is cracked in places, not polished, not trying to be. You get the feeling he’s not so much doing this as releasing it. It’s hard to mimic that kind of unevenness well, thus it’s probably not fabricated.
The lyrics are consistent with the meaning of the title, and there are no ventures into lighter themes. It doesn’t resolve into hope toward the end, it repeats the weight of it. Nor is there a silver lining to owing anyone.
“Maumivu” is not an easy listen, nor is it meant to be. Mkataba Mc built not something pleasant but something honest. That’s rare enough to sit with.
