Tanzanian singer-songwriter Mavokali returns reinvigorated with “Cheche,” a colorful Bongo Flava cut that combines romanticism with a dancefloor-ready production.
The title is a translation of “sparks” from the Swahili language, and Mavokali uses it to convey the tremendous experience of finding someone who entirely reshapes his emotional universe. So “Mavokali Cheche” is hardly a sophisticated love song. It delves deeply into infatuation, swapping between Swahili and English, maintaining that bright, warm, easy-to-sing-along feeling. Hitboy Entertainment is backing the release, opening a new chapter for an artist who already has a name for himself with his breakthrough smash “Commando (Mapopo).”
The arrangement builds with clean guitar riffs, lively electric keys and snappy percussion shakers to give the single that trademark mid-tempo Bongo Flava bounce previously expected by his fans. Much of the emotional heft here is borne by Mavokali’s sumptuous tenor, which rides the beat with the sort of sprightly Swahili phrasing that’s allowed him to build up real regional momentum over the years.
The visual element was added by director Lashku who took care of the music video that accompanied the release. From the engaging delivery to the irresistible, repetitive hook, “Cheche” reads like a private courtship made widely danceable.
