American singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine is back with a tender new single, ‘The Light in the Painting’.
This one is the lead song from her forthcoming fourth album, Angel, due out September 18 on RCA Records. Written over two years ago, it’s the very first song composed for the project. So it’s a foundational weight, setting the emotional tone for everything else that happens on the record.
The production slowly evolves from a pared-back, minimalist glow into heavier instrumentation. Slowly layered in, not all together, acoustic guitar, soothing piano and patient drumming. And that naturalism has become one of her most distinctive signatures as a songwriter.
The song on a lyrical level is about the first blissful phase of a new relationship before doubt or history have had a chance to develop. Every verse flows in unbroken peace. So even without any dramatic turns the song is interesting via sheer emotional clarity.
