Kenyan Afrobeats artist Lexsil teams up with South African singer-songwriter Sbahle for a new cross-border single named “Shona Malanga”.
This one was revealed with Lexsil keeping it simple on Instagram — “Friday we make memories.” That energy went right into the release. The anticipation both musicians were bringing into this collaboration was already evident before the song dropped. Fans from both East and Southern Africa were already discussing.
“Bounce” and “Remedy” are among Lexsil’s recent records, as he’s been slowly developing his cross-continental profile. Connecting with Sbahle extends that reach to the vibrant music scene in South Africa. It’s a pairing that makes sense – two artists from different corners of Africa finding common ground on one record.
The title itself is heavy. “Shona Malanga” roughly translates to “let the sun go down” in Zulu, a word historically associated with reunion and endurance. It’s an Afrobeats crossover record motivated by love, and it’s built on using “Shona Malanga” as a cultural texture most collaborations don’t even try for.
