Uganda’s first female music duet, Ataleya and Kandle, deliver “Siwabula,” produced by Brian Beats and Ope, with graphics from Aaronaire.
The record delves into the strain any couple encounters when voices from the outside threaten the calm of a partnership. Kataleya and Kandle base their concept on vulnerability – the trust to be close to someone while protecting yourself from pressure from the outside. So “Siwabula” is not a naïve romanticizing of love. It knows the discomfort of real devotion.
Their vocal trade at all is what propels the record’s emotional trajectory. The style oscillates between intimate, conversational moments to more rhythmic, harsher delivery that parallels the increase in uneasiness within the narrative. Because the theme itself is volatile—trust tested, then defended—and the duo’s back-and-forth performance portrays that instability without losing musical control.
This record is also a real turning point for the duo. Three months ago, they demonstrated tremendous tenacity in a difficult time by dropping their ‘Amateur’ project following a split in management. Another essential part of the context of how far they’ve come is Vinka’s role in helping to revive their career since then. So “Siwabula” is not simply a new single, but confirmation that the collaboration survived a terrible chapter and emerged much stronger.
