“When I’m Home” is a new song from the soundtrack to “The Odyssey,” featuring producer and performer James Blake, Travis Scott and Ludwig Göransson.
“This one didn’t come out of a conventional album cycle. The whole song is a nod to old myth, wars, sirens, Troy, everything taken from Homer’s epic, and the video is directed by Travis Scott himself. Blake’s library has always been experimental-leaning, thus a soundtrack piece like this actually suits his sensibilities nicely. He’s been playing with R&B and electronic textures for years, bending them into something more abstract, and this sounds like a continuation of that same restlessness.
Göransson’s production is ever-shifting, marrying haunting orchestral with ambient elements throughout. Things never stay the same for long. The dramatic sound design takes the music from calm anxiety to something closer to anarchy and then pulls back again. It feels more like a film score than a radio hit, and that’s certainly the point.
It begins with Blake’s delicate, almost fragile vocals that are full of genuine emotional weight. His half is haunting, like a warning, not a hook. Then Travis Scott comes in and transforms the whole vibe, his delivery choppier and louder, putting true intensity into the mix. The contrast is the whole motor of the song.
Scott’s words are full of legendary imagery, of fleets, of war, of a lost soul in Troy, while Blake’s chorus returns like a siren call under him. They make something more like a dark story than a regular cooperation. It’s not meant to be casually replayed, yet it deserves its intensity.
