Tanzanian hip-hop artist Ice Boy, from Germany, has released a new solo track, “Posa.” He is part of a growing wave of artists from the East African diaspora in Europe who are retaining their style rooted in their native countries.
In the past few years Tanzanian hip-hop has seen a renaissance with artists from the streets of Dar es Salaam to the diaspora expanding the genre into new spaces. Ice Boy is in that diaspora lane, carrying the cultural weight of Bongo Flava and Tanzanian street music in a European environment. That double experience tends to make artists with something more layered to say, and “Posa” reflects that.
The production is built on a hard-hitting hip-hop foundation with an East African rhythmic flavour. The beat is stripped down and direct, allowing Ice Boy’s delivery to hit the listener with no unnecessary clutter. The arrangement does not attempt to overcomplicate what is essentially a simple statement record anywhere.
