Romanian producer DJ Goja stretches out “Mi Chico” on this new slowed version, retaining Jason Derulo and Melody’s vocals but bringing the whole thing to a hazier pace.
The original has a narrative in it worth knowing. The concept came to him while working on children’s music and he wanted that same repetitive, easy-to-remember framework mixed with Afro house rhythm, Goja stated. That’s a strange place to start a summer dance record. But it does explain why “Mi Chico” took off so quickly after Derulo and Melody joined the project.
This slower remake slows the speed and lets the Afro house groove breathe in a fresh way. This one trades the original’s speed and brightness for a more ambient, nocturnal atmosphere. It’s the kind of edit made for headphones as well as clubs.
Derulo’s vocals are definitely there in that slower pocket, and the extra space actually draws more emotion out of his delivery. His phrase about appreciating the way she calls him “chico” sounds softer here, almost compassionate. The original also had that Brazilian pop warmth we rely on so much, with Melody’s presence running through the mix.
There’s a subtlety to DJ Goja’s touch throughout, allowing the vocalists to bear the emotional weight while he handles the tempo. It’s a clever change-up, not a revolutionary change, just a different perspective on an already working tune.
