It’s been deemed the smartest cut on the record by critics already, and is a change of pace from the more bouncy, garage leaning parts of the album. Instead of going pure pop, it brings the music back towards hazy shoegaze area. Fans were quick to spot references to her recent public life, especially her breakup from her “Wicked” co-star Ethan Slater.
The production is one of dreamy, textured guitars and rhythms, making for an almost ethereal sound to the track. No significant hook, environment does most of the emotional heavy lifting. This patience makes the mood of ‘Freak’ considerably distinct from the remainder of the second half of the record.
