Manchester’s Aitch takes a disco classic and remixes it on “RMB (Ring My Bell),” bringing that iconic Anita Ward hook right into the UK rap sphere.
That hook has some history. Originally written for an 11-year-old singer, by Frederick Knight, and then reworked for Ward in 1979, it’s since been sampled by the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff and house producers. Obviously Aitch knew what he was reaching for. Apparently the producer on this one, Bou, played him the original for the first time in session, and that spark turned into the complete track.
Bou develops the beat over house-leaning production, the same lane he played on Aitch’s “Raving In The Studio.” It’s got that four-on-the-floor energy underneath but never loses that UK rap bounce Aitch is known for. The mix is bright and uptempo and true to the disco DNA that it is sampling. There is no lazy interpolation anywhere here.
Aitch rides the beat with his trademark cheeky ease, slipping seamlessly from flexing to flirting. His lines tap into that same wink-and-nudge spirit the original hook always had. He doesn’t attempt to upstage Ward’s sample, letting it take the lead as he adds color around it. That restraint is actually good for the music.
RMB works because it honors where the hook came from, but still sounds contemporary. Aitch has built a career on catchy, radio-ready singles, and this one fits perfectly into that trend. It bounces but does not break.
