The last song on Tanzanian Bongo Flava singer Linah’s “Love Notes” EP is called “Raha” and it’s the happiest moment on the project.
“Raha” is Swahili for “pleasure” or “joy” – and from the very first bar, Linah offers exactly that kind of intensity. But she doesn’t make it easy, or one note. The record fills that special celebratory area where enjoyment is earned, not performed. So “Raha” is warm, not loud.
Position three also has structural significance in that it closes out a three-song EP. Huyu brought in the theme of romance. “Nipo” announced engagement and presence.
Linah’s vocals are sweet and expressive throughout. Her voice captures the delight of the writing without overdoing the moment. The best feel-good Bongo Flava records work because the performance fits the feeling honestly, not because it amplifies the emotion significantly. And “Raha” remains true throughout.
“Huyu” and “Nipo,” her August releases, had also warmed up a warm audience for “Raha” by September 4. So the EP’s last track found its way to listeners who were already bought into where the project was going emotionally. That built-in audience momentum provides more weight to a final track than a frigid release ever could.
