Zambian rapper Frank Ro is celebrating his newfound independence after leaving Olijaba Entertainment with the release of “Ku Bongo,” his first solo effort.

The title means “in the brain” or “on my mind” in local jargon—and the complete concept is derived from the Bemba phrase “Fingi ifinguma ku bongo,” meaning heavy things weigh on the mind. Frank Ro is not sugarcoating the message. He writes about the mental pressure, the financial challenges, the weight of adult duties, and the silent loads that most people carry without displaying—the kind of honest writing that connects instantly because it reflects lived experience rather than aspiration.

Kopala Music Company’s production mixes Zambian rhythms with Amapiano and dance elements into an uplifting sound that doesn’t shy away from the emotional weight of the writing. So the record doesn’t come off as a contradiction—a serious message and an enticing groove residing in the same tune. That balance is what lends “Ku Bongo” tremendous reach, with diverse kinds of listeners.

This release is especially fitting while considering independence. Leaving Olijaba Entertainment, the same label where Macky 2 was and which shaped a certain chapter of Zambian music, is a big professional decision. So to come out with a personal statement as a debut solo album says something particular about what Frank Ro is going to build on his own terms.

The futuristic promotional video provides the album with a visual identity that matches the emotional ambition of the audio. To go the whole package on a debut indie release is a real show of confidence.

Listen to the new single “Ku Bongo” and tell us—did Frank Ro’s independent era begin on a stronger foot than his label years ago?
