The amazing Cardinal X25 gets confessional on “Izono Zami,” and there’s nothing pleasant about how honest it becomes.
Izono zami means ‘my sins.’ As frank as it gets. No metaphor between him and the real entrance. Whatever he’s carrying, he’s naming it directly instead of dancing around it.
Instrumental austere and melancholy, a quiet piano figure lying under barely-there percussion. Nothing rushes to resolution here. The whole set-up appears about being able to sit with discomfort, not smoothing it out.
Cardinal X25’s delivery is somewhat cracked in parts, not smoothed for effect. It doesn’t sound like a show so much as someone working off guilt in public. That roughness in his voice does more for me than any pristine take ever could.
The lyrics border on confession, naming individual failings without making them seem honorable. He’s not asking for pity, just throwing it out there. No tidy redemption narrative put on at the end either.
“Izono Zami” is not comfortable, and that is plainly the idea. Cardinal X25 deliberately made something uncomfortable. Steeping in guilt, not running past it.
