South African music maestro Swayvee goes solo on “Intoxica” and the title alone lets you know where the mindset is at.
Drunk. Could be love, could be a person, or could be more literal. Swayvee is not making this very apparent here, keeping it kind of vague on purpose. This time around, there’s nothing special, just him lugging it all about.
Well beat matching that foggy vibe, log drum a bit looser than usual, some warped synth noises waft in and out. Deliberately off-kilter, not clumsy, simply wobbly in a way that suits the title. Piano stabs blend into each other more than they generally do on his tracks.
Swayvee’s vocals stray a bit here too, not as sharp as ‘G-Shock’ but more slurred, loose. Fits the idea of intoxication without going into parody about it. Sounds like someone really caught up in something, not doing drunk for effect.
The lyrics are still hazy, more about the experience of being sucked under than any particular incident. Repeats that dizzy, overwhelmed feeling a few times and never explains it. Honestly is better left unexplained.
Solo cut and it stands up perfectly without anything holding it up. “Intoxica” lets the emotion do the heavy lifting. Doesn’t need anyone else to be in the room.
