Enugu-based rapper and singer Tuff King delivers genre-bending intensity in his “Black Sheepizen” track dubbed “Self Defense.”
This one goes for Nigerian Drill combined with a unique Afro Adura influence, a combo that makes it stand out from the more straightforward Afro-Beat tracks strewn in his library. “Self Defense” has a sharper, more aggressive edge than fan favorites like “Waka Waka” because that mix is not a frequent one in mainstream Nigerian rap.
Clocking in at just under three minutes, the track is tight and to the point, never outstaying its welcome. Tuff King’s delivery here closely mirrors the Drill influence, sacrificing some of the customary lighthearted chant energy for something tougher and more combative in tone.
“Self Defense” is one such song, which suggests the grittier basis upon which his later, more polished features were built, as his discography has now grown to include features alongside the likes of Phyno on “Women Of My Time.”
