The South African Amapiano collective ATK MusiQ has teamed up with Subzero Junior and DAYSTAR_RSA on a new gritty single called “Abadala” from their homecoming double album “The Return.”
“Abadala” is Zulu for “The Elders” or “The Old Ones”. So already the title alone has a certain gravity before the first note sounds. ATK MusiQ uses that cultural framing with intention — the track feels less like a dancefloor record and more like a message of respect and survival. That angle makes it one of the more unique cuts off of an already large project.”
“The Return” is largely put together by Subzero Junior, and his relationship with ATK MusiQ feels nearly instinctual by now. But ‘Abadala’ provides him with a slightly different setting. DAYSTAR_RSA introduces a new vocal register that complements Subzero Junior’s approach. So the two features don’t replicate each other — they build up tension that keeps the track engaging throughout its length.
The double album marked the conclusion of a six-year break from ATK MusiQ itself. That distance lends an additional meaning to every song on “The Return”. “Abadala” fits that narrative wonderfully — it sounds like music from someone who stepped away, held their patience, and came back with something to say rather than something to prove.
This rewards attentive listening for Amapiano aficionados who go beyond the viral successes and explore the deeper cuts of the genre. The production is thoughtful, not rushed, and the trio creates a groove that extends from beginning to end.
