Brickz is a title that tells you exactly what you are getting yourself into before you even hit play. This is Gugulethu on record — no smoothing, no performance for a mass audience.
Four performers on one single is a gamble. But K.Keed and Orish have proved with Umgaranto II that they can pick out features without allowing the lineup to distract from the song. MidoRSA and April Yung are smart additions and not just names added for numbers.
K.Keed delivers with the same clarity she applies to every record on the project. Her delivery never retreats to please the mob around her. Her steadiness is what makes her a reliable anchor on a collaborative record with so many moving pieces.
Orish artistically holds his end down, whether behind the boards or on the mic. His contributions to Umgaranto II have been as much about generating atmosphere as adding bars. “Brickz” is no exception.
MidoRSA and April Yung add their own vitality to their own areas. There is no feeling of padding in these verses. The record is one unit going forward, not a rotation of individual performances.
