South African producer Msta Villi teams up with KaygeeRsa, Ezase Jupiter and Captain RSA for new Amapiano hit, “Kokotela.”
Always a difficulty, the four names on one record. But “Kokotela” can get away with it because the energy stays trapped, not dispersed. Everyone seems to know their place, rather than to try and top one another. That discipline is what turns a posse cut from a crowded affair into a good one.
Msta Villi makes the production engaging with rhythms and a bouncy beat that keeps on moving without losing its shape. The whole way through, the beat is tight and purposeful. The instrumental has a definite direction, so there is something substantial to work over for everything.
KaygeeRsa and Ezase Jupiter have contrasting vocal textures that blend well without clashing. And they keep the energy level up throughout the middle of the album. You can sense the momentum rising rather than flatlining.
Captain RSA finishes things off with a presence that befits the track’s dancefloor-first DNA. His portion doesn’t add any complexity to something that’s operating now. So “Kokotela” crosses the finish line at the same speed it started.
The title itself in South African slang means to tremble or vibrate. This record deserves that designation from the first bar to the last.
