Trophy previewed the record on Facebook on July 18 with “NORTHMOB x YOUNG STUNNA when do you want it.” Then, Young Stunna posted a video on his Instagram account with 1.5 million followers of him rapping his verse, which gained 48,000 likes before the song was officially released. That’s a rare kind of spontaneous pre-release momentum for an indie collective paying their own visuals.
The Northmob, consisting of Trophy ZA, Orieblxckmaestro, Carlow Picasso and MajorIcey, have been expanding steadily, mixing hip-hop inspirations with sounds that resonate with South African listeners. But “Sjepa” feels like their biggest moment so far. Young Stunna is not simply lending his name here. He actually shows up with a verse that lends real Amapiano vibes to the collective’s Trapcardi universe.
The release also marks the last single before THE NORTHMOB’s next project on the horizon, giving “Sjepa” more significance than merely being a one-off release.
